1. Think about your comfort level with speaking about trichotillomania.

Are you ready to reach out to others and host an event?

2. Think about what audience you'd like to reach.

Possible audiences include: Your family & friends, adults with trich/skin-picking, friends and family of pullers/pickers, teens/kids, school nurses/health professionals in the community, local networking contacts or support group members, treatment professionals from TLC's membership list, etc.

3. Choose a date and time during National Trichotillomania Awareness Week on which to hold the screening.

4. Choose a location for the screening.

Choose a location for the screening and reserve the screening room. How many people are you able to accommodate?  Possible locations include: Your own home, a local community center or religious institution, a local hospital, anywhere with a TV & VCR/DVD that will feel comfortable and safe.

5. Choose a length of time for the event to last.

The documentary is 1 hour long.  1.5 hours has been shown to be a good length of time for the event- allowing for a brief Q&A or discussion at the end.

6. Decide if there will be a fee to attend.

Would you like the event to be a fundraiser for TLC as well as an educational event? At past events, a suggested donation of $5.00 (or whatever you choose) was stated on all publicity materials.  A brief announcement was made and a collection basket set out.

7. Decide if you will offer any refreshments or educational fliers at the event. Contact TLC for fliers and to purchase your copy of Bad Hair Life.

Download invitation templates and purchase your copy of Bad Hair Life.

8. Write down these logistics and contact Leslie at TLC so she can help publicize your event!.

Leslie will make sure your event is listed on the TLC website, included in national press release, and listed in the TLC nerwsletter.

9. At least 6 weeks before the event, invite your audience.

Compose and mail letter inviting your chosen audiences. Or download a template to adapt to your own event. TLC will also provide you with some tips and examples of invitations used in the past.

10. Decide on any additional publicity for the event.

Check out the section Publicizing your Event.

Possible ideas are: Posters on community bulletin boards at libraries, grocery stores, etc., (TLC will mail you 16x20 posters for this purpose),press release in a local paper, sending educational brochures to schools, announcements in community newsletter.

11. Prepare any opening remarks.

Educate yourself by reading some TLC literature and/or the TLC website.  If you plan to offer a Q&A session after the film, decide if you are prepared to answer questions yourself, or if there is a local expert you could invite.  (Q&A is not required.  If you do not feel prepared to answer questions, you could facilitate a group discussion instead.  Or simply guide people to educational resources.)

12. Prepare a sign-in sheet for attendees.

Optional sign-in for further contact with TLC.  Download one here.

13. Enjoy the event!

You will be helping many people and advancing the cause of trich awareness.

14. After the event, please check in with Leslie Lee at TLC.

TLC wants to know how the event went, and to help in the delivery of any TLC donations and sign-in sheets.
